Surprise Cave (Sung Sot Cave) is the largest and most beautiful cave in Halong Bay. Located on Bo Hon Island, Surprise Cave is one of the widest and most striking ones with the area of around 10000m2 and the length of more than 200m. Surprise Cave is firstly explored by a group of French tourists. Being surprised by the magnificent beauty of the cave, these French tourists named the cave as “Grotte des surprises” – the cave of surprise.
A long time ago, the geological formation of limestone in this beautiful bay took place approximately 500 million years. Combination of environment, weather, geology and geomorphology has brought the land a high biodiversity with a variety of stunning landscapes including green forests, beautiful islands and majestic caves. Surprise cave is one of the special one.
First step to Surprise Cave in Halong Bay Cruises you may think that the cave is very small and dark. However, when you pass through a rocky slot and go inside, you will be surprised by the huge expansion. Surprise Cave is divided into two main areas. The first one is like an immerse theater. The ceiling of this area is covered by stalactites and stalagmites, which looks like a silky “velvet carpet” with beautiful motifs or a myriad of glistering and aglow chandeliers. Entering in the second area through a small road, you can enjoy the completely different space in comparison to the first one, which can accommodate thousands of people.0
